Canada: Calgary, Alberta – The Dinosaurs are Alive at the Calgary Zoo. The Zoo’s Prehistoric Park is more lively with Dinosaurs Alive! The spectacular new exhibit, featuring 20 new life-size animatronic dinosaurs that look and sound incredibly real is sure to thrill children and adults alike – but the exhibit is only open until October.
“The Calgary Zoo’s unique and authentic landscape of the Prehistoric Park, originally built in the 1980’s to demonstrate the dinosaur history of the Alberta Badlands 65- 80 million years ago, presents the first opportunity for Dinosaurs Alive! to be exhibited in such a realistic setting,” said Aaron Cunningham, Project Manager for Dinosaurs. “These realistic, fleshy models have special engineering to help them move in a believable fashion. All of the creatures vocalize and some can even be controlled through the touch of a button by a curious visitor,” Cunningham continued.
The new dinosaurs will share the prehistoric park with the zoo’s original dinosaur residents, many of which have been refurbished. Three dinosaurs were designed specifically for Calgary including: lbertosaurus, related to the famous T Rex; Pachyrhinosaurus, a large plant eater with a huge mass of bone on its nose; and the Armoured Euoplocephalus. All stem from the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago.
Working in conjunction with the Tyrell Museum to insure accuracy, Dinosaurs Unearthed is the Vancouver company hired to build the new dinosaurs and install the exhibit. Highlights of the collection include the massive 27 ft. Tyrannosaurs Rex with an impressive roar and the Apatosaurus mother with her baby, measuring at 57 ft. New and improved interpretive and species signage will help visitors get the most out of their tour of the park.
Special activities, promotions and hotel packages surrounding Dinosaurs Alive! will be available throughout the year and current opportunities can be found at www.calgaryzoo.com. With the generous financial support of Travel Alberta and the Calgary Hotel Association, the zoo has invested $1 million to bring Dinosaurs Alive! to Calgary.
