If you live with young dinosaur experts or enjoy family time with dinosaur nerds this dinosaur news will be and extra WOW! because it offers not just the thrill of viewing popular dinosaurs like t-rex and brontosaurus but adds an extra twist unique to the American Southwest.

Here’s the scoop. “Dinosaurs in the Desert” is a one-of-a-kind experience meant to be share. The Zoo has already installed the first dinosaur of the exhibit along the Africa Trail. It’s a citipati. It measures almost six feet tall and has been custom painted in the color scheme of the Chiricahua leopard frog – a true conservation success story at the Phoenix Zoo. So far, the Zoo is responsible for the release of over 23,000 leopard frogs to the wild!

Several other dinosaurs have been custom painted to represent colors and patterns of today’s Arizona desert animals. Some of the creatively customized patterns include:  • Carnotaurus painted like a jaguar • Edomontonia painted like a Gila monster • Coelophysis painted like a Gamble’s quail • Diabloceratops painted like a desert spiny lizard. Dinosaurs in the Desert at the Phoenix Zoo

The self-guided experience includes the animatronic dinosaur structures which move and make various sounds including the infamous roar of a tyrannosaurus rex. A fossil dig will also be part of the dinosaur adventure along the trail which also includes a unique photo opportunity with a pachyrhino.

As part of the exhibit, educational signage will also be found with each dinosaur, highlighting size and interesting facts known about that particular species. Interpretive guides from the ACNC/Phoenix Zoo as well as local experts will be on hand to answer guest inquiries and provide insight into the fascinating world of the prehistoric era.Dinosaurs in the Desert at Phoenix Zoo

Even without dinosaurs Phoenix Zoo is a super adventure for families. The well- marked trails invite discovery of animals and plants. The exercise stations encourage skill building and the residents are easy to observe. Our favorite stop is always the prairie dogs.
