USVI: St. John: Family Vacation Fun - Virgin Islands National Park, Camping with the Kids. 134USVIStaghornHave you ever considered camping in the Caribbean? The Cretcher family from Tucson gave us this tip. It remains high on their list of "best ever spots to vacation". Cinnamon Bay Campground is located adjacent to US Virgin Islands National Park. On site they have bare tent sites, tented platforms and 40 cottages. Both the cottages and the platform tents are equipped for camping. For cottages fresh linens are available twice weekly and they have cribs for little ones at no extra charge. Prices depend on the time of year and the type of accommodation selected. The daily rate for a family of four begins at US$64 on a bare tent site. For the same family selecting a cottage the cost will be between US$77-$100 per unit. These general costs are based on having two children more than four years of age. The additional child-charge is about US$19 per day per child.

To ensure a site it is often necessary to reserve four to six months in advance. From the campground it is a short walk to the park facilities. Guests can take advantage of daily ranger led programs originating at the Cruz Bay Visitor Center. Scheduled activities include guided island hikes; cultural talks, reef walks, and evening camp ground activities. In addition to gorgeous blue-green waters and white sandy beaches there are chances to learn about the history of the island. The same Caribs whose relics have been found on Puerto Rico have left evidence to be viewed. One of the first plantations on the island, Cinnamon bay Estate is also part of one of the favored ranger walks. Bonus points: Even before leaving home it is possible to enjoy a snorkeling adventure online - part of the Junior Ranger Program.

To get to the to the campgrounds will be an experience all by itself. The first step is to fly to St. Thomas, then take a bus or taxi to the public ferry dock. Once at Cruz Bay secure a taxi to Cinnamon Bay Campground. Be sure to discuss the cost before loading your bags into the taxi. To view more details check out these sites.
