Wisconsin: Montello, Pure Family Fun - Scharenberg’s Resort on White Lake. Looking for a carefree vacation, a place where everyone has time to unwind, have fun and rejuvenate? This is the place. Comfy and family friendly, Scharenberg’s Resort is an old sneakers kind of place.

Nestled along the edge of White Lake, shaded by pines and guarded by peacocks, the Resort has been providing families with vacations for more than six decades. Golf nine or 18; discover local markets; bike one of the Princeton loops; fish for blue gill or crappies or just watch the resident peacocks. It is fun made easy.

Resort: Appropriately named "Home of the Peacocks” in honor of the regal feathered residents, for more than seven decades Scharenberg’s has been providing vacation fun for families. Today mature shade trees blanket the resort grounds creating delicate sun/shade patterns.  Maintaining the tradition of providing families a casual comfortable place to vacation, now more than ever quests truly appreciate the easy-paced atmosphere. Sleeping choices include motel-like rooms, 17 cottages, six chalets and several vacation homes. The accommodations have a home spun comfortable feeling that supports the stress free atmosphere. Rustic on the outside but delightful on the inside, most of the housekeeping cottages have lake views. All units are equipped with full kitchens, gas cooking, refrigerators, electric heat, dishes & silverware, linens, blankets and showers. Bonus points:  Each cottage has a picnic table and space for grilling. The vacation homes are adjacent to the golf course and only a short walk to the main resort area and the lake. They also include linens, full kitchens, wooden decks, A/C, and TV. The resort is pet friendly.

When cooking doesn’t make any sense lakeside dinning is an option. Dinning atmosphere is causal and comfortable. Dining selections span all tastes and include kid friendly options. The dinning room is framed by towering pines and provides an unobstructed view of White Lake. The full-service restaurant offers guests an ever changing menu. They also have a chuck wagon buffet, duck & wild rice specialty and not-to-be-missed original recipe corn fritters.  Nearby the dinning room is a bar with an adjacent deck. Need to know: The deck is the computer ‘hot spot” for anyone with a lap top who wishes to get on line.

Activities: A seasoned staff takes care of the details making it truly easy to relax and enjoy sunny days by the lake. The obvious benefit of a stay at Scharenberg’s is the sandy white beach and the awesome Wisconsin sunsets over the lake. The lake itself is crystal clear and spring-fed making it ideal for swimming, fishing and boating. Try your luck fishing for bass, bluegill, perch and crappie or you may rent the following; divers, paddle boats, pontoons and motorized fishing boats. The beachfront includes four piers, a diving board, two rafts, a water slide and playground. On site there is also a recreation room with pool table, ping pong, jukebox & video games. Bonus points: Peacock watching is fun for everyone.

In the area: Located between Montello and Princeton, the resort is an ideal vacation base for daytrips and adventures. Hike in John Muir State park; bike along old railway routes; jaunt to the circus; see McHugh’s Miniature Horse Ranch, ride horse at King’s Ranch;  shop Princeton’s flea market on the weekend or just browse Main Street and stop at Mimi's for lunch; try canoeing; go antiquing or play a game of golf.

Value Added:  Only at Scharenberg’s will you find peacocks on the welcoming committee. The resident flock numbers more than two dozen. They are left to wander throughout the resort adding a slightly surreal element to the grounds. The birds, beautiful and exotic, perch on rooftops and hop onto tree limbs sometimes screeching at one another and chasing about oblivious to onlookers. Bonus points: A natural draw as the week begins is the lounge adjacent to the dining hall. Spunky, welcoming and definitely family friendly, most nights there is something going on like Karaoke, trivia competitions and impromptu joke sessions. Making new friends is part of the experience and this is conversation central.

Discoveries: Our stay was what a vacation is meant to be, relaxing. It has been five decades since my sister and I counted peacocks at Scharenberg’s. When we were kids, the resort seemed endless and the lake never ending; the peacocks, then as now, exotic and unexpected. In reality the resort is a comfortable size for families. The children, many of them veterans of previous summer vacations on site, seemed to love to freedom to explore, play in the lake and watch for peacocks and their feathers.

The lake cottages arranged in a summer camp fashion with easy access to the lakeshore and the dinning facility. Cloaked by the shade of whispering pines it is easy to just relax by the lake. The beach is soft and forgiving and ideal for kids of all ages. The crystal clear water and white sandy lake bottom make it easy to see even the tiniest of minnows.

Most of the parents and grandparents I spoke with return to Scharenberg’s each summer. Many of them meet friends the same week each season. Everyone agreed that it is friendly, comfortable and affordable. The resort is safe for kids and relaxing for adults. While there is plenty to do in the area several indicated it was their safe harbor, no need to venture away; the lake, beach and golf make the week complete.

The meals served in the dinning hall are exceptional. The menu varies daily but old favorites are always available. The atmosphere matches the resort, casual and comfortable yet the service is efficient. Did I say the bread is divine? Each week on Tuesday there is a cookout, part of the tradition of any stay. Holidays create yet another reason to celebrate. From face painting and marshmallow roasts to sing-alongs and fireworks, it’s fun.

In addition to the lake cottages there are several vacation homes along the golf course. They offer more space and more privacy yet have easy access to the fun stuff at the center of the resort.

Location: Just minutes from Green Lake between Montello & Princeton off Hwy. 23.

On our left, pasture land framed by a significant cliff line and on our right a wall of mature trees hid the shoreline.
