Texas: Hill Country, Comfort’s Scarecrow Invasion Is Pure Family Fun.321TXScarecrows Fall has officially arrived when the smiling faces of scarecrows begin to appear in Comfort for the town’s annual Scarecrow Invasion.

The event celebrates the autumn beauty of the Texas Hill Country and the harvest season. Prime viewing for these cleverly themed and colorfully decorated characters begins mid October each year.

These fun symbols of the harvest season become yard art in Comfort as residents and business owners display their creativity and compete to be the best. The many historic homes and buildings in Comfort provide an extra special setting for the scarecrows. Some creations capture the essence of fall, complete with hay bales, pumpkins and garden mums, while others display a humorous touch. The result great photo opportunites for visitors and residents.

Jasanda and Nick Watson have created awarding-winning scarecrows for several years. It’s a team effort according to Mrs. Watson who decides on the theme and makes the costumes while her husband builds the figures. She said that their five grandchildren provide lots of inspiration, and they usually do a theme related to children or that includes children at play. In 2008 their entry was “Peter Pan in Neverland” and it won first place in the residence division. Their creations attract at lot of drive-by traffic during the Scarecrow Invasion, and her husband lights them for night time viewing.321TXScarecrowFamily

The Scarecrow Invasion provides a festive fall backdrop for the annual Comfort Village Antiques Show, directed by Tommy and Lori Titsworth. It has been dubbed the show that put country back into the country. Here's the deal: Admission to the show, which is held in Comfort Park, is $5 per person with children younger than 12 admitted free. The booths are under cover, so the show goes on rain or shine.

After seeing the antiques show, visitors can shop stores in downtown Comfort and along Highway 27. The city is rich in architectural heritage and nearly the entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the structures house antiques stores, specialty shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts. Most of them participate in the annual Scarecrow Invasion.

Location on the planet. The town is an easy drive from San Antonio and Austin for families who want to enjoy a fall weekend in the Hill Country. Comfort also has accommodations to meet the needs of almost any traveler from cabins in the country to lavishly decorated Victorian era mansions and picturesque creek side and river side lodgings.
