Tours: Austin-Lehman Adventures - A Family Vacaiton in South Africa. 361ALASouthAfricaKidsIt is certainly true that the world is meant to be shared with your children and some of the best learning is done outside of the classroom. While on safari with Austin-Lehman, families can get up close and personal with Africa's abundant wildlife from giraffes and zebras to lions and rhinos.

As with all of Austin-Lehman’s family trips, the South African departure is designed for families with children seven years and older, have an emphasis is put on fun. Each unique itinerary is not only culturally immersive but offers one-of-a-kind small group learning opportunities that benefit both kids and parents. Accompanied by veteran nature guides and rangers, participants will get up close with iconic wildlife on foot, by bike, on horseback and by 4-wheel drive in South Africa's safe and secluded private wildlife reserves. A trip to a township school to watch local artists create trinkets from recycled products is also included.

It is the nature of ALA to limit the size of its programs to increase access afforded only to small groups. “Our credo has always been smaller is better,” says Dan Austin, co-founder and operating director. “With an average of just 12 guests and led by local experts, we can go places and do things that larger safari companies can’t.” 361ALASouthAfricaMasks

He underscores that his company also arranges custom journeys for as few as two guests. Tailored to personal schedules and budgets these exclusives offer better wildlife viewing opportunities and provide increased access to special and spontaneous experiences.

The Southern Africa Family Adventure begins in Cape Town. From upscale family-friendly lodgings guests head into the bush of Waterberg and Welgevonden Private Game Reserves to observe elephant, rhino, giraffe and lion. Home base for the remainder of the trip is Cape Town where families will swim with African penguins, tour a local township and school and enjoy a regional wine and cheese tasting tour.

FTF editor’s comments: I am thrilled to see ALA’s trips to South Africa. Though I have not taken the ALA trip described I can attest to the family friendly value of South Africa. The country is beautiful and truly a rewarding spot to share with children and ideal for teens. We were surprised at the “Watch for rhinos!” signs along the roadside until we saw one lumbering across the pavement. We discovered Johnny Clegg and Savuka during our trip – great music not just for teens (we own every CD released). The night sounds which draped our campfire made the storytelling better than 4-D. Cape Town is a delightful seaport city with great energy, clever residents, and an interesting history. Table Mountain anchors the city and invites discovery via aerial tram (although it was not operating when we were there) and we spent hours discussing what we learned on Robben Island. I enjoyed bargaining for tiny witch doctor looking dolls at an open-air roadside market and the kids picked up plenty of souvenirs for their friends; sharing sand space at Boulders Beach with African penguins is a must and definitely one-of-a-kind experience. On the way to the Cape of Good Hope our kids were more impressed with the roadside residents – the curious baboons. And they remember nothing of our sleeping accommodations except they still talk about their big discovery – the direction of the spinning water in the toilet bowl.
