The renowned Gran Caribe Real Cancun is thrilled to host the “White” turtles that have chosen the clear blue Caribbean waters in front of the hotel as their top spot to swim.
The clearly discerning turtles have also been known to choose the sanctuary of the Gran Caribe Real Cancun’s white-sand beach to lay their eggs. Every year during the months of July and August, hundreds of female White sea turtles return to the beach of their birth to dig their nests and lay their eggs at night. Once these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, as they have for thousands of years, the incubation period is approximately 45 days. With the aid of resort employees, these nests are preserved, minimizing the possibility that the eggs will be harmed or destroyed.
If nature allows, during their stay, guests are invited to participate in the release of the hatchlings.
The tiny hatchlings are returned to the sand at night, where they instinctively go towards the ocean, following the horizon and the moon.
The Gran Caribe Real Cancun’s fantastic children’s program, Oki Kids Club, for children ages four to 12 will now incorporate information on the White turtles. A member of the Sports & Entertainment team will take children on “turtle hunts” to spot swimming White turtles from the shoreline. A knowledgeable member of the Sports & Entertainment staff will be on hand to answer all the children’s questions and educate them about the species. Children will be encouraged to make drawings of turtles while visiting the property. Families that have the opportunity to participate in a hatchling release will be given an “Eco-Friend Vacationer Certificate,” as a keepsake gift.
