Quebec: Quebec City, Carnaval 2012 – The Best Winter Time Family Fun. Each year Bonhomme, Québec City’s chunky red capped snowman, leads the way to all things fun. And each season Québec's Carnaval reinvents itself as a new, more fun street party framed by dramatic ice sculptures, snow clad landscapes, oodles of snow activities, delicious food, and marvelous music.

In 2012 the Québec Winter Carnaval, in collaboration with LotoQuébec, will be marked once again by a festive atmosphere, where music and dance will play a predominant role celebrating the rhythms and encouraging everyone to dance.  Image a street party with thousands of carnival goers – all dancing. That is exactly what is being planned so if you have older children or teens sharing the fun will be easy.

It’s a big deal. Carnaval is the largest winter carnival in the world today, and is third on the list of top carnivals which include Rio and New Orleans. In 2012 from January 27 to February 12 Carnaval invites everyone join in the fun, burn off some energy and to experience the effervescence of life is Carnival.

Go for the music. Carnaval is very much an interactive festival designed for participation and interaction. The lively musical menu of choices will be in full swing with a series of outdoor dance parties featuring Latino, disco, hip-hop, percussion, and traditional rhythms. Everyone is invited to attend lively dance shows which will include break dancing, cheerleading, salsa, martial arts, folk dancing. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the huge choreographed workouts, dance workshops, and be part of the gigantic “snow” bunny dance.

Share the fun with kids. Carnaval offers plenty of ways to share the fun with your children. In addition to snow slides, snow games, ice skating, lively shows, and a unique Children’s Village for tots, who doesn’t enjoy a dog sled ride across the Plains of Abraham or a spontaneous sleigh ride? You’ll find sled dog agility competitions and races, and a variety of snow sport competitions. Discover the true maple flavored taste of winter at an authentic Qubecois cabane a sucre (sugar shack) or for a thrill go snow rafting. Bonus points: Not to be undone by the winter hoopla and in homage to Calgary’s Stampede, Albertans in parkas and cowboy hats will be serving official Calgary Flap Jacks for breakfast (dealicious beyond your dreams).

Make it happen. Continue the tradition established by the habitants of New France. Get together just before Lent to eat, drink, laugh, sing, dance, and enjoy the best of winter. From January 27 to February 12, Carnival will make you want to dance with or without your kids. The best bet is to secure a Bonhomme Effigy Carnaval Pass which allows access most activities and all of the fun. The passes go on sale in January. (For more information checkout www.carnaval.qc.ca)
