Illinois: Route 66, Family Vacation Idea - A Roadtrip Across America. 560ILRoute66SheasFrom Chicago to LA more than 2,400 miles the route weaves through remarkable places with effortless formality. It is the road that inspired songwriter Bobby Troup’s famous lyrics "get your kicks on Route 66...."

Steinbeck called it The Mother Road in "The Grapes of Wrath." It is in reality an interesting journey offering one-of a kind experiences and truly amazing photo opportunities. The fact is Disney did not do Route 66 so the “real” USA is on view. Each section of Route 66 presents something old/something new and definitely offers an American portrait of spirit and tenacity with historic rest stops and campgrounds, museums and parklands weaving an amazing collage of discoveries to be made. The slow going is part of the charm; one of a kind eateries not to be missed. Most significant about Route 66, the friendly people willing to connect with travelers and improve the drive with stories and directions, insider tips and good wishes.

The debate of west to east or east to west will more than likely never be settled. I prefer driving west and cannot really explain why, except that I like the idea of heading toward the sunset. Even driving just a few hundred miles is worth the effort because there are plenty of places where 1952 still shows through. With kids it is not so much the route itself but the one-of-a kind experiences along the way. I have selected a few favorites - high value low cost adventures popular in the 50s and worth the time today - to provide a sense of the trip.

Chicago needs no introduction for families - world-class museums, awesome festivals, and fabulous food. It is an exciting city and the perfect launch pad for a Route 66 adventure. Leaving the city behind the Land of Lincoln conveys a bucolic sense of well being at least during the summer months when farmers’ markets and wild flowers line the way.

Illinois: Springfield, Meet at Mr. Lincoln’s place.560IlRoute66LincolnWagon Every child of school age has heard of President Abraham Lincoln so a short stop at his house is worth the time, if only to secure bragging rights for the next history class. The two-story home of Abraham Lincoln, the only home he ever owned is open for tours. It is located within four-block historic neighborhood, now being restored to depict the era much as it may have been when the Lincolns lived on the street. The site has a Junior Ranger booklet available at the Visitor Center that provides useful activities and a badge for completion. There are two theaters that provide an orientation video. Free tour tickets for the Lincoln Home are available at the information desk. Bonus points: The city of Springfield is an enjoyable, easy paced spot; the size is manageable – not overwhelming or exhausting, and definitely affordable. Activities include living history, time travel, vintage carriage rides, ghost walks, glow-in-the-night golf and an authentic drive-in movie theater.  (Visitor Center is located at 426 South Seventh Street, Springfield. www.nps.gov/liho/index.htm)

Illinois: Collinsville, Find the ancient mounds.
Cahokia Mounds Historic Site covers more than 2000 acres and is largest prehistoric Indian mounds complex north of Mexico. A visit to this location puts the history of North America in perspective. At the Interpretive Center provides timeline and displays artifacts from the working site and during the summer excavations are conducted. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO Cahokia Mounds was inhabited from about A.D. 700 to 1400. At its peak, from A.D. 1100 to 1200, the city covered nearly six square miles. Tours provide more evidence of the once thriving community but little to solve the mystery of what happened?
