Enjoy native delights like sugared pecans, peach herb tea, fresh boiled shrimp and a ballpark comfort food. From art museum treasure hunts and open-air folk concerts to ballpark tours and double headers communities across the state have a sense of how to make enjoying "the good life" easy.  Friendly residents enjoy sharing their unique heritage and insider tips.  Georgia has a comfortable style that makes vacationing with kids effortless. We’ve selected some of the good stuff but there is plenty left to be discovered from Albany and Lumpkin to Calloway Gardens.

Retreat with birds and butterflies. Callaway Gardens is actively engaging in stewardship to secure the future. Their spoken message is “Our earth, our responsibility.”  The more than 14,000-acre complex contains natural beauty worth a trip. Within the tranquil complex, the ways to interact with nature are innumerable. The Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center is at the launch pad for all activities and information. The Day Butterfly Center is North America's largest, glass-enclosed conservatory. It showcases more than 1,000 tropical butterflies representing more than 50 different species. The crystal like enclosure is filled with tropical plants and birds, including energetic hummingbirds. Visitors also have access to Sibley Horticultural Center, miles of walking/biking trails, a pioneer log cabin, as well as lake and beach activities. (US Hwy. 18 and GA Hwy.27 Pine Mountain, 31822. Sneak up on an elephant. Hidden in the piney woods not far from Albany, Chehaw Wild Animal Park part of the larger 800-acre Parks at Chehaw, is a delightful discovery. TV’s Wild Kingdom naturalist Jim Fowler originally designed the complex. It features more than 100 acres of natural habitat with exhibits of native and exotic animals. Visitors navigate trails and boardwalks through woodlands and over cypress swamps. The youngest visitors enjoy the petting zoo, while the older guests relate to the hands on docent demonstrations and animal presentations. The reptile house is intriguing and the small animal house fun for all ages. Discovery: The signature activity of the complex is the Wiregrass Express miniature train ride through the park. There is even a bike track for serious BMX fans. (Hwy. 91 at Philema Road, 31703. (912) 430- 5275 or www.parksatchehaw.org)

Create art together. The Albany Museum of Art is a 40,000 square foot visual arts institution with six galleries featuring African, European and American works. The museum has an interactive gallery for children. Called AMAzing Space, the gallery allows children to have a hands-on experience with art. They also have monthly “Family Days” created to provide art activities for whole family. Discovery: Checkout annual Summer Art Camp, a unique program allowing kids to begin with art instruction in the galleries studying the works on the wall, then using those works as an influence in their own masterpieces. Try time warp baseball. Too good to be true, the first Sunday of every month from April-September visitors to Historic Westville in Lumpkin have a chance to play a version of vintage baseball with the not so famous Westville Biscuits. The game is conducted using 1860s style rules and an old time field. The equipment of the same vintage includes custom-made baseballs, white oak bats hand-carved by craftsmen on the premises, and baseball outfits reflecting the period. (Lumpkin.
