Georgia: Dahlonega, Family Vacation Ideas - River Rafting, Foot-Stomping Music & American Bison. In Georgia’s Mountain Region the opportunity for fun is endless with wild and wonderful natural places where time is abundant and memories are waiting to be created. Family fun in the mountains - no lines and no hassles.

Raft a river; tube a stream; go in search of American bison; listen to foot stomping music; check out a ball game or sample pecan pie or scrumptious peach cobbler. From Royston to Dahlonega you find family friendly folks and plenty of easy-paced family fun.

Raft on a wild river. At the top of Georgia, the Chattooga River forms the border with South Carolina. It offers a true wilderness setting with stunning scenery and plenty of options for novices and family groups. For the more adventurous, the same river has plenty of challenges for whitewater paddlers. The Chattooga is a free-flowing river, so water levels vary with the amount of rainfall each season. Discovery: The dam-controlled Ocoee River (oh-KO-ee) is one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the East. The river is about an hour from Atlanta and provides a full range of whitewater levels, from easy paced Class III rapids for beginners to challenging IV+ for advanced whitewater enthusiasts.

Tube on the Toccoa. Even if whitewater rafting seems like too much, hardly anyone can resist river tubing with the kids on a hot summer day. Not far from McCaysville, the gentle headwaters of the Toccoa River (tah-KO-aa), also known as the Ocoee Tennessee, provide ideal conditions for inner tubing, canoeing, kayaking or rafting sans whitewater. Outfitters in the area provide float transportation and make it easy to spend a day on the river. With a picnic lunch and cooler, the adventure is complete.

Look for a bison. Located in Dahlonega, Chestatee Wildlife Preserve, focuses on educating visitors while creating memories. The Preserve contains more than 100 different species of animals, including Bengal and Siberian tigers, African and Barbary lions, chimpanzees, wallabies, kangaroos, wolves, fox, bison, white tigers, elk, and peacocks.  There are many places to sit throughout the Preserve and an unspoken goal is to provide a safe non-commercial place for each guest to enjoy the gift of time with loved ones. They have created a place for visitors to just sit, watch and reflect. It is a wild place that is fun. (Chestatee Wildlife Preserve. (706) 864-9411 or www.chestateewildlifepreserve.org)

Bluegrass at its best. This region of Georgia is a cornucopia of uniquely American bluegrass music. Unlike other locations on the planet residents and visitors alike participate in what is often impromptu and eclectic. One of the best spots is the Folkways Center where on weekends there is entertainment that is not-to-be missed. On the first Saturday it is The Dahlonega Mountain Music and Medicine Show, a live radio broadcast with music, humor and historical sketches based on local life. The 2nd Saturday features an Old Fashioned Square Dance with music provided by string bands and the square dancing is taught on the spot. On the last Saturday The Mountain Music Hall hosts performances of acoustic 'roots' mountain music featuring old-time, bluegrass, gospel and other music styles unique to Southern Appalachian. Remember Ty Cobb? Nestled in the rolling hills of Georgia’s upper piedmont, the Ty Cobb Museum is one of northern Georgia’s best kept secrets. History buffs and baseball card collectors will smile knowing there is a museum in Georgia that is dedicated to one of baseball’s best. The museum fosters education and understanding of baseball and Ty Cobb by providing art and memorabilia, film, video, books and historical archives. (Ty Cobb Museum, Royston. Baseball farm club games are often less stressful and more rewarding for families than major league games. The playing field and players seem more real because the crowds are smaller and the players closer. Not to mention that the whole experience is less expensive. From April to Memorial Day baseball played in the cool mountain air can’t be beat. The Rome Braves, a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and a member of the South Atlantic League, offers fans of the game plenty of opportunities while in Rome.
