Ireland: County Cork, Commemorating RMS Titanic and Sharing History. Cohb Harbor County Cork Ireland2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sea voyage and ultimate disaster and the seaside community of Cobh will pay tribute with a series of inspirational events.

Why Cohb? As history indicates, the coastal community of Cobh on Ireland’s southwestern shore was the departure point for many Irish emigrants sailing to North America with hopes of a better life. It was also the final port of call for the fateful passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic.

Here’s the scoop. Visitors to County Cork now have several ways learn more of the stories, facts and conditions that led up to the sea disaster and to actively pay tribute in the process.

Walk the Titanic Trail. For more than a decade historian Dr. Michael Martin and his staff have been conducting guided tours that explore the town of Cobh (once known as Queenstown), the harbor and its history.  The one-hour escorted 2012 Centenary Tour focuses on the story of RMS Titanic and its irrevocable relationship with the town. Bonus points: Additional tours include the Spike Island Tour and an eerie Ghost Walk of the town which highlights the haunted sites and paranormal activity in Cobh.

Throughout the year commemorative events are planned. Highlights include “Titanic - Reflections and Reactions” presented by the Cobh Museum beginning in March. In April Cohb will host “The Titanic Centenary Week” with special market days, a national tribute with Air Corps fly-over, Navy fleet review, and a series of outdoor concerts created to tell the story of the Titanic's connection with the island of Ireland.

During the commemorative week in April the Irish Coast Guard will demonstrate National Search and Rescue . An ecumenical Titanic Remembrance Service is also planned and later in April, a two-day Titanic lecture series has been organized by University College Cork.

Summer commemorative events include concerts on Spike Island, and in July Cobh Vintage Fair will take visitors back to the first days of the 20th Century creating an atmosphere of the Victorian and Edwardian era. The year will conclude with RMS Titanic closing ceremonies and Christmas celebrations.

Location on the planet. Cobh is located along the North Atlantic about ten miles from Cork City.  From Cork by auto is about ½ hour. From Shannon fewer than two hours and from Dublin plan on three hours.
