California: Los Angeles, “Pacific Standard Time” – A Celebration of Art and Artists.Watts Towers LA - Pacific Standard Time Learn about the birth of the L.A. art scene from the people who shaped it. This unprecedented cultural and artistic collaboration showcases how Los Angeles imagined the world. How cool is this?

From studio arts, pop music, and movies to fashion, dance, and surfing, Los Angeles has created many of the world’s most iconic cultural symbols. “Pacific Standard Time” demonstrates by example how L.A. culture defined America in art, books, dance, film, and music.

Here’s the scoop. From Oct. 2011 through April 2012, the international spotlight shines on Los Angeles as more than 60 Southern California cultural institutions come together to present Pacific Standard Time, a festival of exhibitions and performances highlighting Southern California's contribution to American postwar art and design. An initiative of the Getty with arts institutions across the Southland, Pacific Standard Time celebrates the birth of the LA art scene and the iconic artists, who shaped many of today's most vital trends nationally and internationally.

Collectively titled, Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980, this collaborative initiative of the J. Paul Getty Trust links arts institutions across Southern California. During the six-month span museums, art galleries and performance spaces will showcase four decades of art made in Los Angeles highlighting the tremendous creativity and diversity of Southern California. Bonus points: For parents with young children the Getty will hold several free, day-long family festivals with music and dance performances by local ensembles art-making workshops, and gallery tours.

Plan ahead. Beginning in January 2012, Pacific Standard Time will also showcase Los Angeles' rich history of the performing arts with a ten-day performance and public arts festival that will extend from Malibu to Watts and Downtown to the desert.
