New York: NYC, Bryant Park Family Activities and Happenings in the City.
Summer in the city is always a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and experiences and no place is better to enjoy free or almost free family fun than in Bryant Park. Enjoy Broadway in Bryant Park.
For six consecutive Thursday afternoons during the summer enjoy free Broadway performances in the park. The 12th annual “106.7 Lite FM’s Broadway in Bryant Park 2012” begins July 12 on the Bryant Park Stage. The lunchtime concert series will run through August 16. Among the participating shows: The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Ghost, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Nice Work If You Can Get It. Bryant Park is on 6th Avenue between 40th and 42nd Street. Lawn seating will be first-come, first-served. Try juggling in Bryant Park.
Test your coordination and dexterity with free juggling lessons in the park. All skill levels are welcome to join in the fun and equipment is provided. The Bryant Park Jugglers use the park throughout the year. They're a friendly group and open to drop-ins, even if you catch them outside of the regular juggling lessons. Ride Le Carrousel.
Perhaps one of the most magical places in the park is Le Carrousel. Its 14 delightful animals, replicas of classic carousel creatures, revolve to the sounds of French cabaret music. The rounding boards, inspired by Bryant Park's elegant baroque-style torchères along 40th Street, blend into the leafy canopy of the park's plane trees. Bonus points:
On Saturdays from 1:00 to 2:00 throughout the summer join the fun with Le Carrousel Kids and Flaubert Frog & Friends. Here’s a deal: Buy a discounted card and enjoy 10 rides for $15. Wait for it!
On Sundays from 1:00 to 2:00 throughout the summer join Le Carrousel Magique Voila! Watch as some of the world’s best magicians perform fun-filled tricks for kids of all ages. (Produced in partnership with www.mondaynightmagic.com
.)Take a game break in the 40th Street Plaza.
The all new games area has an eclectic collection of lawn and tabletop games available to the public to play for free. Choose from the constantly expanding selection of games, including: scrabble, Mancala, dominoes, banana grams, playing cards, Chinese checkers, Jenga, and Apples to Apples. Play Quoits.
What kid doesn’t love a game of Quoits. Sort of like horseshoes, the traditional format of quoits challenges players to toss a ring over a pin or spike. The Bryant Park is slate-board quoits with rubber rings. Each player is given two quoits, which they attempt to get closest to their pin, or better yet, to throw a ringer, encircling the quoit around the pin. Skate the Citi Pond.
From late October until late February each year Citi Pond is the centerpiece of the park and includes an annual set of holiday shops along with the ice rink. The 170' x 100' rink features free admission ice skating, in addition to high-quality rental skates, skating shows, special events, and activities. www.CitiPondatBryantPark.comLocation on the planet:
