Virginia: Families Soak in Virginia's Summertime Fun along the Coast.
Last summer on our return from Canada to Florida we made a few stops in Virginia. One of those stops was Luray Caverns just off US 81. Even though I spend most of the calendar year teaching middle school science I was surprised at the abundance of underground possibilities in Virginia. For years I have explained to my students that 400 million years ago a continental shift caused the Blue Ridge Mountains. That what is now the Shenandoah Valley was once at the bottom of the sea. This shift caused conditions that eventually resulted in the formation of hundreds of caves and caverns located in North America. Last summer I had the chance to show my own children first hand one of these ancient wonders of the natural world.
